Getting a ticket as an adult is usually not fun. But getting a ticket at Ivy Academia TK-8 school? THE BEST! It means you were “caught” following the rules in our CHAMPS program.

Keeping It Positive

What is our CHAMPS program? Think of it as your shortcut to knowing the expectations of our small engaged school where we care deeply about each and every one of our students. Or call it being thoughtful about setting our students up for success because that is our goal every day.

At tuition-free Ivy Academia we use Positive Behavior & Support (PBIS) Intervention, a team-based process that focuses on systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach that creates a safe and productive learning environment, where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

CHAMPS is a consistent and unified approach to expectations that each classroom and space on our lovely Woodland Hills campus shares. The letters of CHAMPS spell out what each space expects, no matter what grade or class you’re in.

C - Conversation level expectations (whisper, conversation voice, outside voice…)

H - What a student does for Help (raise hand, etc.)

A - Activity (reading, testing, working with your group)

M - Movement for student (seated, standing, walking with purpose)

P - Participation expectations (e.g. work in a team, in pairs, or by yourself)

S - Success (if you spelled out “CHAMP” in your actions, that is SUCCESS)

What are these “spaces”? Think the library (can you guess the volume level?). Think the gym space (yes, the volume is well, a bit more pronounced). Even our front office has expectations (conversational voice is appropriate here). Sometimes, a class might have multiple CHAMPS expectations spelled out depending on the activity.

 Recognizing Greatness

So what’s with the tickets? This is the fun part that happens when students follow the rules. Whenever a staff member catches a student following the rules, setting a good example, helping a friend or being compassionate, this student is awarded a “Caught Being Good” ticket. Students can earn these tickets multiple times during the day and in all areas on campus: their classroom, walking between rooms, the lunch area or even the playground. There’s a monthly drawing where students are recognized and prizes are involved. It’s put on by the student government who even provides the prizes - they know what students like!
